Here is an updated list of books received by Eastern Art Report and scheduled for review online and in the print edition --

  • ARTS OF KOREA, edited by Judith G Smith, with essays by Chung-Yang-mo, Ahn Hwi-joon, Yi Song-mi, Kim Lena, Kim Hongnam, Pak Youngsook and Jonathan W Best. Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and distributed by Harry N Abrams from Spring 1999. 512pp, 350 illustrations, 148 in colour, Price US$50.0, ISBN 0-87099-850-1. The publication of this lavishly illustrated scholarly work coincides with the opening in Summer 1998 of the Met's permanent Korean gallery. The essays trace significant events in the development of Korean art from the Neolithic period to the nineteenth century. Although much work has been done in Korea on tracing the history of Korean art, its stylistic and technical innovations, this is a rare convergence of some of the best minds on the subject and their writings in English. A treat throughout.
