A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan. Photographs by Seamus Murphy

1 July - 13 September, 2008 | Asia House, London

Seamus Murphy 2004: Ishakem, Badakhshan Province

In these photographs, Seamus Murphy records Afghanistan's people and its striking landscapes with a clarity of purpose. The effect overall is at once evocative and disturbing, with the inevitable question: how long must it be before these people can have back their dignity and basic necessities of life?

From 1994 to 2007, Seamus Murphy photographed the effects of the Taliban regime, the tumultuous years of civil war and the historical elections following the fall of the Taliban. Alongside scenes of war and politics, his magnificent photographs capture intimate images of domesticity, work and leisure. The exhibition at Asia House is accompanied by a book of the same title.
