Gordon Cheung's Statement

The 'painting' is constructed from collage material originating from various sources: London Underground maps, Financial Times stock share listings and photos of videoed circuit boards. This material is then processed to form an image of a painterly gestural mark that is then used to 'paint' with. In a sense the pigment is substituted for collage and the brush for technology -- the mix between the two resulting in the simulated mark.

One of the propositions of the work is: What is it that makes a painting when paint is removed from the process?

The resulting work can say something about the social landscape in today's information age, as well as invite the viewer to question their habitual perception and conception of reality, not only in relation to their everyday environment but also to painting itself.
