Iranian/Persian Art
Eastern Art Report covers both the traditional and contemporary aspects of Iranian / Persian art and Eastern Art Report Online also features news items of interest on aspects of archaeology and ancient civilisations of the Iranian world.
What is the difference between Iranian art and Persian art? The jury still is out. While according to some interpretations, Iranian art and Persian art are interchangeable terms, according to others Persian art is distinct from Iranian art because the former 1. refers to traditional art and 2. refers to art as it existed in Iran before the establishment of the Islamic Republic. Whatever...
Something to bear in mind, however: Iran is not all Persian, in fact, about half of Iran today is Turkic. So not all Iranian art can be correctly identified or categorised as Persian art.
'Persian art' is also a term often loosely applied to the art produced by artists of Iranian / Persian descent based outside modern Iran, including those integrated into these societies. Depending on the creative content and each individual artist, this may or may not be justified.
An added problem is that some Iranian artists who live abroad may not wish to assert their Iranian / Persian identity, choosing instead to become 'citizens of the world.'
