Focus on Japanese Art | ||||||||||||||||||||||

Mariko Mori, Mirror of Water, 1998, from the Serpentine Gallery London exhibition. Eastern Art Report covers both the traditional and contemporary aspects of Japanese arts. But 'Japanese art' is a term often loosely applied to the work of Japanese artists based outside Japan, including those integrated into western societies, as well as artists of Japanese descent in any number of host cultures. Depending on the creative content and each individual artist, this may or may not be justified. An added problem is that some Japanese artists who live abroad may not wish to assert their Japanese identity, choosing instead to become 'citizens of the world.'
